320 – ʿAlī ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us; Salama ibn Ghifār said that Sufyān remarked, “If you want to gauge the worth of this world, look at the sort of people who possess it.”

I also read, in the autograph manuscript of Dāwūd ibn Rushayd, that Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṣūrī told me: Ibrāhīm ibn Adham said, “The sole purpose of the ascetics’ renunciation of this world is to avoid having to share in the folly and ignorance of the foolish and the ignorant.”
