Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

314 – Abu ʿUmar al-Azdi narrated to me, 2438, saying: An Arab once exhorted his son, telling him, “My boy, this world chases after the one who chases after it and runs alongside him. So escape from it before you perish in it, for—by Allah—it has already served you notice of separation and has folded itself up for you for but a short while.” ʿUmar ibn ʿAli ibn Harun then recited to me:

“The world is nothing but shifting fortunes—
one honored and one abased.
A companion of poverty is despised,
while the man of wealth is esteemed.
But when good luck departs,
sound judgment departs with it.
Every hardship and every pleasure
in this life will pass away;
Then only Allah will remain,
along with one’s deeds and every noble act.”
