308 – Muhammad ibn ʿAli narrated to us; he said: Abu Ishaq narrated to us; he said: I heard al-Fudayl say: “It is reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: ‘When my community comes to magnify the life of this world, the awe that Islam inspires will be taken away from them; and when they give up enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, they will be denied the blessing of revelation.’” He added: Sufyan transmitted words to the same effect. Sufyan said, “This is stated in the Book of Allah, may He be exalted: ‘I shall turn away from My signs those who behave arrogantly on earth without right’ (al-Aʿraf 7:146).” He explained, “That is, I shall strip their hearts of understanding the Quran.”
