Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

307 – Muhammad ibn ʿAli narrated to us; he said: Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn al-Ashʿath narrated to us; he said: Yahya ibn Sulaym narrated to us; he said that ʿUmar ibn Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir said to me:

“Tell me: suppose a man were to fast all his life without ever breaking the fast, spend every night in prayer without flagging, give away his wealth in charity, fight in the path of Allah, and avoid every prohibition of the Exalted One—yet, on the Day of Resurrection, he is brought before all creatures in that greatest assembly before the Lord of the worlds, and it is announced: ‘Here is a man who exalted in his own eyes what Allah has deemed trivial, and belittled in his own eyes what Allah has deemed great.’ What, in your opinion, will his fate be? Which one of us is not like that—regarding the world as enormous while we have accumulated so many sins and offenses?”
