293 – Al-Hasan ibn ʿAli narrated to me. He reported from Zayd ibn al-Hubab, who said: Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm told me:
They once raised the subject of zuhd (worldly detachment) in the presence of al-Hasan. Some of them said, “It is in one’s clothing,” others said, “It is in one’s food,” and others offered different notions. Al-Hasan replied, “You have not understood the matter at all. The person of true renunciation is the one who, whenever he sees someone, says, ‘He is better than I am.’”
