284 – Salamah b. Shabīb related to me; he said: al-Ḥumaydī related to me, from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, from his father; he said: I heard Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik say, “Those who carry the lightest burden of anxiety in the Hereafter are the very ones who carried the lightest burden of anxiety in this world.” ⦗138⦘ Sulaymān b. Abī Shaykh then recited:
The world has ever been a source of grief—
no companion of hers escapes affliction.
A realm of calamity and cares,
a house of lament, sorrows, and complaint.
Just when a youth is basking in his delight,
he is suddenly cast beneath its ruins.
Its faults dog the heels of its beauties:
there is but a breath between an obituary and glad tidings.
