Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

28 – Ishaq b. Ismaʿil narrated to us; he said: Rawh b. ʿUbadah narrated to us; he said: ʿAwf, from Awfa b. Dalham, from al-ʿAlaʾ, said:

“I saw in a dream a very old woman, her skin furrowed with wrinkles, yet she was adorned with every worldly ornament. People were crowding around her, gazing at her in wonder. I, too, drew near, looked, and was amazed at the way they stared at her and flocked to her. I said to her, ‘Woe to you! Who are you?’ She replied, ‘Do you not recognize me?’ I said, ‘No; I have no idea who you are.’ She said, ‘I am the world (al-dunyā).’ I said, ‘I seek refuge with Allah from your evil.’ She answered, ‘If you wish to be protected from my evil, then detest the dirham.’”
