Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

277 – Muhammad ibn ʿUthmān ibn ʿAlī al-ʿIjli narrated to us; he said: Ḥusayn al-Juʿfi narrated to us, from Zāʾidah, from Hishām, from al-Ḥasan, who said:

ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) once went out on an exceedingly hot day, his cloak spread over his head for shade. A young boy passed by, riding a donkey, and ʿUmar said to him, “Young man, let me ride with you.” The boy instantly dismounted and said, “Mount, O Commander of the Believers.” ʿUmar replied, “No. You ride, and I will sit behind you. You would have me sit on the rough part while you take the comfortable one. Rather, you mount, and I will ride behind you.”

So they entered Madinah with ʿUmar seated behind the boy, and the people looked on in astonishment.
