27 – Abū ʿAlī al-Ṭāʾī narrated to me; he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muḥāribī narrated to us, from Layth, that Jesus son of Mary, peace be upon him, once saw the world portrayed as a wizened, toothless old woman, decked out in every kind of ornament. He asked her, “How many husbands have you taken?” She replied, ⦗33⦘ “I could not possibly count them.” He said, “Did they all die and leave you, or did they all divorce you?” She answered, “No— I killed every one of them.” At that Jesus, peace be upon him, exclaimed, “Alas for your remaining husbands! Why do they not learn from those who came before them? How can you ruin them one after another, while they take no precaution against you?”
