264 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan al-Marwazī narrated to us; he said: Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ashʿath narrated to us, from Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ, who said: I heard him say that Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon him) declared:

“You will never attain what you want unless you give up what you crave, and you will never obtain what you hope for except by patiently bearing what you dislike. Woe to the devotee of this world: he dies and leaves it behind; he feels secure with it, yet it betrays him; he trusts it, yet it deceives him. Woe to those deluded by the world: how swiftly within it ⦗128⦘ what they loathe draws near, how what they desire slips away, and how what they were promised overtakes them. Woe to the one whose only concern is the world and whose deeds are sins—how exposed he shall be tomorrow!”
