261 – Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to me; he said: ⦗127⦘ Hāshim ibn al-Mutawakkil al-Iskandarānī related to us; he said: Abū ʿAbbād the Ascetic transmitted, from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, who said:

“Wretched indeed is the son of Adam! He is content with a dwelling whose lawful portion will be scrutinised and whose unlawful portion will bring torment. If he obtains it lawfully, he will still be taken to task for its comforts; and if he obtains it unlawfully, he will be punished for it. The son of Adam finds his wealth too little, yet never thinks his deeds too few; he rejoices when a calamity befalls his religion and panics when a calamity befalls his worldly life.”
