259 – Al-Ḥasan ibn Maḥbūb and others reported to us; they said: Isḥāq ibn Sulaymān al-Rāzī narrated, from Abū Jaʿfar al-Rāzī, from al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “The mere remembrance of death is enough to make a person lose his appetite for this world and long for the Hereafter.”
Abū Bakr added: One of the sage-poets has said:
O dweller in this world, will you build a house
in which, when Death arrives, no dweller will remain?
Death is a certainty you know full well,
yet still you treat its mention with disdain.
The Reaper never bargains with the one she seeks,
she neither waits for a moment nor asks permission.
So know—mark my words—that all you gather today
is but a treasure you are storing for someone else.
