Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

253 – Hamzah narrated to me; he said: ʿAbdān narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: Yūnus ibn Yazīd informed me, from al-Zuhrī, who said:

“It reached us that ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Saʿdī— a man of Banū ʿĀmir ibn Luʾayy and one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—used to relate the following:

‘While I was asleep, I found myself standing atop a mountain. As I remained there, a great company from this ummah came into view, filling the horizon. When they drew near, the mountain passes rose up before them, adorned with every bloom the world can offer. They rode past, and not a single rider turned to look at it. Once they had gone beyond it, the passes closed in again with all that they contained. I stayed where I was for as long as Allah willed.

Then another company, just like the first, appeared. When they reached the spot where the first group had been, the passes were lifted before them, decked with every blossom of the world. Some of them took from it and others left it, all while remaining on horseback. When they had gone on, the passes drew tight once more with everything in them. I remained as long as Allah willed.

Then a third company came into view. When they reached the distance attained by the previous two groups, the passes were lifted for them, displaying every worldly flower. The first rider among them made his mount kneel, and no one rode past him. They dismounted and began scooping up the world’s wares, and the last I saw of them they were still gathering while their mounts had already gone on ahead.’”}
