251 – Hamzah ibn al-‘Abbās narrated to me; he said: ‘Abdān narrated to us; ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us; he said: Ibn Luhay‘ah informed us; he said: Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb related to me that Abū al-Khayr told him that ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Āmir al-Juhanī told them:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the funeral prayer for the martyrs of Uhud eight years after the battle, as though bidding farewell to both the living and the dead. He then ascended the pulpit and said:
‘I am going on ahead of you as your forerunner, and I am a witness over you. Your promised meeting-place is the Cistern, and indeed I can see it from where I stand. I do not fear that you will fall into polytheism after I am gone; rather, I fear this worldly life for you— that ⦗123⦘ you will compete with one another for it.’”
‘Uqbah added, “That was the last time I ever looked upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
