250 – Hamzah ibn al-‘Abbās narrated to me; he said: ‘Abdān ibn ‘Uthmān narrated to us; ‘Abd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak informed us, saying: Ma‘mar and Yūnus related to me from al-Zuhrī, from ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, who said that al-Miswar ibn Makhramah told him that ‘Amr ibn ‘Awf—the confederate of Banū ‘Āmir ibn Lu’ayy, and a participant at Badr with the Messenger of Allah—reported:
“The Messenger of Allah sent Abū ‘Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, and he returned with funds from Bahrain. When the Anṣār heard of Abū ‘Ubaydah’s arrival, they attended the dawn prayer with the Messenger of Allah. Once the Messenger of Allah had finished the prayer and turned to leave, they positioned themselves in his path. The Messenger of Allah smiled when he saw them and said, ‘I imagine you have heard that Abū ‘Ubaydah has come back with something?’ They replied, ‘Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Then rejoice and hope for what will delight you. By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you; rather, I fear that the world will be spread out before you as it was for those before you, that you will vie for it as they vied for it, and that it will destroy you just as it destroyed them.’”
