246 – Khalaf ibn Hisham al-Bazzar narrated to us; he said: It has reached us that Sufyan al-Thawri used to recite:
[al-Baḥr al-Ṭawīl]
I see the wretched of mankind never weary of this world,
though within its bounds they go naked and hungry;
For all the love it attracts, I deem it but a summer cloud
that will soon break apart and vanish;
Like travellers who have finished their business and moved on,
the open road before them, its markers plain and clear.
