235 – Hamzah ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated to me; he said: ʿAbdān ibn ʿUthmān informed us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, and Sufyān from Sulaymān ibn al-Ḥārith ⦗116⦘, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd, from Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

“You exert yourselves in struggle for a longer span and you perform more prayers than the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—yet they were better than you.”

They asked, “Why is that?”

He replied, “Because they were less attached to this world and more desirous of the Hereafter than you are.”
