230 – Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qurashī and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Azdī narrated to us; they said: al-Muḥāribī narrated to us, from Mūsā al-Juhanī, who said: I heard ʿAwn ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah say:
“Woe is me! How can my need for this world become so pressing when it is not my homeland? Or how can I hoard for it while my lasting settlement and eternity lie elsewhere? Or how can my greed for it grow so strong when nothing of it that I leave behind will benefit me? Or how can I prefer it when it has already harmed those who preferred it before me? Or how can I not hasten with my deeds before the end of my appointed term? Or how can I fail to ransom myself before my pledge is sealed? ⦗115⦘ Or how can I expose my soul to what my passion cannot endure? Or how can my amazement at it intensify when it is bound to leave me and be cut off from me?”
