23 – Muhammad ibn al-Husayn narrated to me; he said: I heard Abu Zakariyya al-Mantuf relating to al-Qawariri; he said: The world was mentioned in the presence of al-Hasan al-Basri, whereupon he remarked:
A sleeper’s dream or a vanishing shade—
no man of insight is ever deceived by it.
٢٣ - حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا زَكَرِيَّا الْمَنْتُوفَ، يُحَدِّثُ الْقَوَارِيرِيَّ قَالَ: ذُكِرَتِ الدُّنْيَا عِنْدَ الْحَسَنِ الْبَصْرِيِّ، فَقَالَ:
أَحْلَامُ نَوْمٍ أَوْ كَظِلٍّ زَائِلٍ ... إِنَّ اللَّبِيبَ بِمِثْلِهَا لَا يُخْدَعُ
