Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

228 – Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Taymī related to me; he said: Shurayh the Worshipper and Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Shaybānī narrated to me; they said: We heard Hantam ibn Jahshah al-ʿIjlī, Abū Bakr the devotee, say: ⦗114⦘
[meter: al-sarīʿ]
O suitor of the world, enamoured of its show—
each day it takes to itself a fresh “beloved.”
How deadly the world is to those who court her:
from ages past she has slain them, cohort after cohort.
She weds a husband, yet has already resolved
upon another to replace him elsewhere.
I, too, am beguiled, though decay is at work
in my body, little by little.
So stock provisions for the house of death, for its herald
has already cried out: “Break camp! Break camp!”
