216 – ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Salih narrated to me; he said: al-Husayn b. ʿAli al-Juʿfi narrated to us, from an elder of Basra, from Yazid b. Maysarah al-Himsi—who had studied the earlier Scriptures—who said:
“I find in what was revealed: ‘Does My servant grieve when I withhold the life of this world from him, even though that draws him nearer to Me? Or does My servant rejoice when I expand the life of this world for him, even though that drives him farther from Me?’”
He then recited: “Do they suppose that because We supply them with wealth and sons, We are hastening good things for them? No indeed; they do not perceive.” (Quran 23:56)
٢١٦ - حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجُعْفِيُّ، عَنْ شَيْخٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ مَيْسَرَةَ الْحِمْصِيِّ، وَكَانَ قَدْ قَرَأَ الْكُتُبَ، قَالَ: أَجِدُ فِيمَا أُنْزِلَ: أَيَحْزَنُ عَبْدِي أَنْ أَقْبِضَ عَنْهُ الدُّنْيَا، وَذَلِكَ أَقْرَبُ لَهُ مِنِّي، أَوْ يَفْرَحُ عَبْدِي أَنْ أَبْسُطَ لَهُ الدُّنْيَا، وَذَلِكَ أَبْعَدُ لَهُ مِنِّي. ثُمَّ قَرَأَ ﴿أَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُمْ بِهِ مِنْ مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ نُسَارِعُ لَهُمْ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ بَلْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: ٥٦] "
