214 – Hamzah narrated to me; he said: ʿAbdān transmitted to us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh related to me; he said: Ḥaywah b. Shurayḥ narrated to us; he said: Abū Hāniʾ al-Khawlānī informed me that he heard ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth, along with others, say:

“This verse was revealed concerning the People of the Ṣuffah: ‘Had Allah expanded the provision for His servants, they would surely have transgressed throughout the earth’ (42:27). ⦗106⦘ They had said, ‘If only we possessed the goods of this world,’ and so they longed for worldly things.”
