211 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: ʿAlī b. Abī Maryam related to me, from one of his teachers, who said: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Zayd declared:
“Alas for the worshippers! Do they feel no shame in chasing the life of this world when their provision has already been guaranteed? The one who desires it has been spared the labor of seeking it, yet they were commanded to obey, and still they pursue from it that which—if they fail to obtain it, they remain safe, and if they do obtain it, they are left in regret. Is there any real good except the good of the Hereafter? Whatever ‘good’ this world offers is nonexistent; its ease is censured, and anyone who falls short of his allotted share in it is blamed.”
