175 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil reported to us; he said: Jarir narrated from Layth, who said:
A man once accompanied Jesus, son of Mary (peace be upon him). The man said, “Allow me to stay with you and travel in your company.” So the two of them set off until they reached the bank of a river. They sat down to eat, having with them three loaves of bread. They ate two loaves, and one loaf remained. Jesus rose, went to the river and drank, then returned but did not find the remaining loaf. He asked the man, “Who took the loaf?” He replied, “I do not know.”
They continued on together and saw a doe with two fawns. Jesus called one of the fawns; it came to him, and he slaughtered it, roasted part of it, and he and the man ate. Then he said to the fawn, “Rise by Allah’s leave,” and it rose and went away. Jesus said to the man, “I ask you, by the One who has shown you this sign, who took the loaf?” He answered, “I do not know.” ⦗84⦘
They came to a stream. Jesus took the man’s hand and the two of them walked upon the water. After they had crossed, he said, “I adjure you by the One who has shown you this sign: who took the loaf?” He said, “I do not know.”
They then reached a barren plain and sat down. Jesus gathered some earth—a mound of sand—then said, “Become gold, by Allah’s permission,” and it became gold. He divided it into three equal parts and said, “One third is for me, one third for you, and one third for whoever took the loaf.” The man said, “I am the one who took the loaf.” Jesus replied, “Then all of it is yours,” and he left him.
Two other men came upon him in that wilderness while the gold was with him. They wanted to seize it from him and kill him. He said, “Let us divide it between us three ways. Send one of you to the village to buy food.” So they sent one of them.
The one who went said to himself, “Why should I share this wealth with the other two? I will mix poison into the food and kill them.” So he did. Meanwhile the other two said, “Why should we give him a third of the gold? When he returns we will kill him and divide it between us.” When he came back, they killed him; then they ate the food, and both of them died.
Thus the gold remained in the wasteland while the three of them lay dead beside it.
In the version other than the narration of Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil it states: Jesus later passed by them in that very condition and said to his disciples, “This is the world—so beware of it.”
