172 – Hamzah ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated to me; ʿAbdān informed us; ʿAbdallāh—meaning Ibn al-Mubārak—reported to us; Ibn Luhayʿah reported; Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd related that a man said, “O Messenger of Allah, how can I know what state I am in?” He replied, “Whenever you pursue something that concerns the Hereafter and it is made easy for you, while anything you seek of worldly affairs becomes difficult for you, then you are in a good state. But if the opposite is true, you are in a blameworthy state.”
