135 – Al-Hasan ibn Yahya ibn Kathir related to me. He said: Khuzaymah, Abu Muhammad, narrated to us: A man once came to an ascetic, and the ascetic asked him, “What has brought you here?” He replied, “I was told of your renunciation.” The ascetic said, “Shall I guide you to someone who is more ascetic than I?” The man asked, “And who would that be?” He answered, “It is you.” The man said, “How can that be?” The ascetic explained, “Because you have renounced Paradise and all that Allah has prepared therein, whereas I have renounced only this world—with its fleeting nature and the fact that Allah has condemned it. Consequently, you are more ascetic than I.”
