126 – ʿAli ibn Muhammad narrated to me; he said: Ahmad ibn Abi al-Hawari narrated to us. He said: I asked Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah, “Who is the ascetic in this world?” He replied, “The one who, when blessed, is grateful, and when tested, is patient.” I said, “Abu Muhammad, suppose someone is blessed and gives thanks, and is tested and remains patient, yet he hoards the blessing—how can he be an ascetic?” He struck me with his hand and said, “Be quiet! The person whom prosperity does not prevent from gratitude ⦗70⦘ nor affliction from patience—that is the true ascetic.”
