117 – Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil related to us; he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Ayyub ibn ʿAidh, from Qays ibn Muslim, from Tariq ibn Shihab ⦗67⦘:
When ʿUmar reached a ford in Syria, he removed his leather socks, took one of them in his hand, grasped the halter of his mount, and waded into the water while the people looked on. Abū ʿUbaydah came up to him and said, “Today you have done something momentous in the eyes of the people of this land—you did such and such.” ʿUmar tapped him on the chest and said, “Ah! Had anyone other than you said that, Abū ʿUbaydah! You were once the most humiliated and insignificant of people, but Allah honored you through this religion. Whenever you seek honor through anything else, Allah—Mighty and Majestic—will abase you.”
