105 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Shaqīq narrated to me; he said: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ashʿath narrated to us; he said: al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ related, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥassān, from al-Ḥasan, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to his Companions one day and said, “Is there anyone among you who wishes that Allah Most High grant him knowledge without having to learn, and guidance without needing to be led? Is there anyone who wishes that Allah remove blindness from him and make him truly seeing?
Know that whoever craves this world and allows his hopes in it to stretch long, Allah blinds his heart in proportion to that craving; but whoever renounces the world and shortens his hopes therein, Allah grants him knowledge without study and guidance without instruction.
Indeed, after you there will come people whose rule will be established only through killing and tyranny, whose wealth will be secured only through miserliness and boastfulness, and whose affection will be won only by compromising the religion and following caprice. Whoever among you lives to see that time and remains patient with poverty though he is able to be rich, patient with hostility though he is able to win love, and patient with humiliation though he is able to attain honor—seeking by that nothing but the Face of Allah Most High—Allah will grant him the reward of fifty of the truthful ones (ṣiddīqīn).”
