104 – Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī al-ʿIjlī narrated to us; he said: ⦗62⦘ Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī al-Juʿfī narrated to us, from Jaʿfar ibn Burqān, who said: I was informed that Wahb ibn Munabbih used to say:
"The trait that most helps a person uphold his religion is detachment from the world, and the one most likely to destroy him is following his whims. From following whims comes desire for the world; from desire for the world comes love of wealth and status; from love of wealth and status comes the violation of sacred limits; and once those limits are violated, Allah becomes angry. From Allah’s anger arises an illness for which there is no cure except the good pleasure of Allah, and the good pleasure of Allah is a remedy after which no illness can harm.
Whoever wishes to please his Lord must displease his own self, and whoever does not displease his own self will never please his Lord. If, whenever a matter of his religion feels heavy, a person abandons it, he is on the verge of having nothing of it left at all."
