84 – Muhammad b. Idris al-Hanzali narrated to us; he said: Saʿid b. ʿAbd al-Hamid al-Darimi al-Razi, the Qurʾan-reciter, told us; he said: Yaʿqub b. ʿAbd Allah al-Ashʿari narrated to us, from Harun b. ʿAntarah, from ʿAbd Allah b. al-Saʾib, from ʿAbd Allah b. Masʿud, who traced it back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):

“How will you be when your governors multiply and your women become overbearing?”

They asked, “Will that really happen, O Messenger of Allah?”

He replied, “Yes—and worse than that.”

They said, “And what is worse than that, O Messenger of Allah?”

He answered, “You will no longer enjoin what is right, nor forbid what is wrong.”

They said, “Will that indeed come to pass, O Messenger of Allah?”

He said, “Yes—and more than that.”

They asked, “And what is that, O Messenger of Allah?”

He replied, “You will not even recognize what is right, nor will you repudiate what is wrong.”

They said, “Will that actually happen?”

He said, “Yes—and worse still: what is right among you will be regarded as wrong, and what is wrong among you will be regarded as right.”
