83 – Muhammad b. Bakkār narrated to us; he said: Ḥafṣ Abū ʿUmar related to us, from Qays b. Muslim, from Ṭāriq b. Shihāb, who said:
“I was present at the Eid prayer with Marwān b. al-Ḥakam. He had the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) brought out, then mounted it and began to preach. A man in the crowd called out, ‘O Marwān, O Marwān!’ Marwān turned toward him, whereupon all fell silent and craned their necks to listen. The man said, ‘You have gone against the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): you have brought out his pulpit, though it was never brought out, and you have put the sermon before the prayer, whereas the sermon should come after the prayer.’
Another man in the assembly said, ‘He has discharged his duty. By Him in whose hand is my soul, this is exactly what he is obliged to do. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Whoever sees a wrongful act, let him repudiate it with his heart.”’
I asked, ‘Who is the one speaking?’ They replied, ‘That is Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī.’”
