80 – Muhammad ibn Bakkar narrated to us; he said: Hafs ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, who said: “I asked Ibn ʿAbbās, ‘Shall I enjoin the ruler to what is right and forbid him from what is wrong?’ He replied, ‘If you fear that he might kill you, then do not.’ I went back to him again, and he gave me the same answer. I returned once more, and he repeated the same and added, ‘If you feel you must do it, then keep it between you and him—privately.’”
