68 – Hamzah ibn al-ʿAbbas narrated to me; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUthman informed us; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed us; he said: al-Ajlah narrated, from al-Shaʿbi, who said: I heard al-Nuʿman ibn Bashir preaching from the pulpit:
“O people, restrain your fools, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
‘A people once embarked upon the sea in a ship. They drew lots, and each man was allotted his place. One of them took an axe and began to bore through the plank beneath him. The others said, “What are you doing?” He replied, “This is my spot; I may do with it as I please.” If they seize his hands, they and he will all be saved; but if they leave him to it, they will all drown—he and they together. Therefore, restrain your fools before you all perish.’”
