54 – Al-Ḥasan ibn Jahur told me, on the authority of a shaykh from Quraysh, who said: “Dahtham once passed by, accompanied by his companions, and they saw a man thrashing his young servant. Dahtham said to him, ‘Servant of Allah, fear Allah.’ The man thereupon brought his whip down between Dahtham’s ears. Dahtham’s companions leapt toward him, but Dahtham said to them, ‘Hold back! I have heard Allah—relating a father’s counsel to his son—say: ‘My dear son, establish the prayer, command what is right, forbid what is wrong, and endure patiently whatever befalls you’ (31:17). We have been ordered to enjoin good and forbidden to evil, so let us bear with patience what has come upon us, that we may enter into the counsel of that righteous man.”
