53 – ʿAli ibn al-Hasan ibn Abi Maryam narrated to me, from Abu Zayd al-Raqqi, who said: al-Fudayl ibn ʿIyad remarked, “You should instruct only those who are willing to heed you. Tell me: if you came face to face with a ruler, would you say to him, ‘Fear Allah’? Had you done so, you would have ruined your household, yourself, and your neighbors. Instead, safeguard your own soul and keep your whereabouts concealed.”
