Al-Amr bi-l-Ma'ruf wa-l-Nahy 'an al-MunkarIbn Abi al-Dunya

48 – Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Kathir told us; he said: Abu Dawud told us; he said: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thabit:

Silah ibn Ashyam and his companions once noticed a man whose izār (lower garment) was hanging below his ankles. Silah’s companions were about to rebuke him, but Silah said, “Leave him to me; I will deal with him for you.”

He approached the man and said, “Nephew, I need a favor from you.”

The man replied, “What is it, uncle?”

He said, “Raise your izār.”

The man answered, “Certainly—gladly.”

Silah then turned to his companions and said, “Do you see? Would you have achieved this result had you addressed him harshly?”

The man said, “I will not do it again,” and he lifted his garment.
