43 – Al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ narrated to us; he said: Ḥajjāj ibn Nuṣayr narrated to us; he said: Mālik ibn Mighwal narrated to us, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, who said: I heard Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim say: I heard Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—while he was on the pulpit, declaring:

“O people, you recite this verse: ‘O you who believe, take care of your own souls; those who have gone astray will not harm you if you are rightly guided’ (al-Māʾidah 105). Yet I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘When people witness an evil and fail to change it, Allah will soon encompass them all with a punishment.’”
