32 – Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUbayd narrated to me; he said: “Hishām ibn ʿAmmār informed us,” he said: “Ḥammād ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Kalbī narrated to us,” he said: “Khālid ibn al-Zibrakān al-Qurashī narrated to me, from Sulaymān ibn Ḥabīb al-Muḥāribī, from Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī, who traced it back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said:
‘How will you be when your women become domineering, your young men engage in open sin, and you give up your jihad?’
They asked, ‘Will that really come to pass, O Messenger of Allah?’
He replied, ‘Yes—by Him in Whose hand is my soul—and something even more severe will occur.’
They asked, ‘And what is worse than that, O Messenger of Allah?’
He said, ‘How will you be when you no longer enjoin what is right and no longer forbid what is wrong?’
They asked, ‘Will that actually happen, O Messenger of Allah?’
He answered, ‘Yes—by Him in Whose hand is my soul—and something even worse will happen.’
They asked, ‘And what is worse than that, O Messenger of Allah?’
He said, ‘How will you be when you regard what is right as wrong, and regard what is wrong as right?’
They asked, ‘Will that truly take place, O Messenger of Allah?’
He said, ‘Yes, and something yet more grievous will happen. Allah, Exalted is He, says: “By Myself I swear, I shall unleash upon them a trial in which even the most forbearing among them will be left bewildered.”’
