Al-Amr bi-l-Ma'ruf wa-l-Nahy 'an al-MunkarIbn Abi al-Dunya

24 – Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Saʿid al-Hamadhani, the freedman of Quraysh, reported to us; he said: al-Qasim ibn al-Hakam al-ʿUrani narrated to us; he said: Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq narrated to us, from Ismaʿil ibn Abi Khalid and Bayan ibn Bishr. They both said: Qays ibn Abi Hazim narrated to us; he said: I heard Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, say:

“O people, do not let this verse in al-Ma’idah beguile you: ‘O you who believe, you are responsible only for yourselves; those who stray cannot harm you when you are rightly guided’ (al-Ma’idah 5:105). You must surely enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, otherwise Allah will unleash upon you the worst among you; then the best of you will plead, yet their plea will not be answered. By Allah, you will enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, or Allah Most High will chastise you with a punishment.”
