20 – Al-Ḥasan ibn Ḥammād al-Ḍabbī reported to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad al-Muḥāribī narrated to us, from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Musayyab, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Sālim al-Afṭas, from Abū ʿUbaydah, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “There was a man among the Children of Israel who, whenever he saw his brother committing a sin, would admonish him, ‘Stop—that is wrong.’ Yet the very next day, in spite of what he had witnessed, he would still eat, mix, and drink with him as usual. When Allah saw them persisting in this behavior, He caused their hearts to harden against one another and cursed them through the tongue of their prophets David and Jesus son of Mary, saying, ‘That was because they disobeyed and habitually transgressed.’
“By Him in whose hand is my soul, you must enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, seize the hand of the offender, and compel him to follow the truth—or else Allah will cause some of your hearts to harden against others and He will curse you just as He cursed them.”
