19 – ʿAlī ibn al-Jaʿd reported to us; he said: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from Ṭalḥah ibn ʿAmr, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
“We asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, suppose we were to refrain from enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong until we had practiced every aspect of righteousness and abandoned every trace of sin—would that mean we should neither command right nor forbid wrong at all?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, ‘Enjoin what is right even if you have not fulfilled it in its entirety, and forbid what is wrong even if you have not abandoned it completely.’”
