18 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ reported to us; he said: ʿAmr ibn Hāshim narrated to us, from Ṣabāḥ al-Muzanī, from Muḥammad ibn Sūqah, from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who said: The one who had heard ʿAlī related to me that he said:
“Striving in Allah’s cause rests upon four pillars: enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, truthfulness in every circumstance, and detesting the defiantly sinful. Whoever enjoins what is right strengthens the back of the believer; whoever forbids what is wrong rubs the nose of the hypocrite in the dust; whoever is truthful at crucial moments has discharged what is due from him; and whoever loathes the sinners and becomes angry for Allah’s sake, Allah will become angry for him.”
He said: A man then rose, approached ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him), and kissed his head.
