120 – ʿAlī ibn al-Mundhir al-Kūfī narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl narrated to us; he said: Layth narrated to us, from Bishr, from Abū Shurayḥ, who said:

“Hudhayfah came out to us and said, ‘Has the news reached you?’ We asked, ‘What news?’ He replied, ‘ʿUthmān has perished.’ We exclaimed, ‘By Allah, then we are ruined!’ He said, ‘You have not perished; you will perish only when the grey hair of an elder is no longer respected, nor the seniority of the aged acknowledged—when you end up shuffling on your knees like partridge chicks, no longer enjoining what is right and no longer forbidding what is wrong.’”
