114 – Hamzah ibn al-ʿAbbas narrated to me; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUthman narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed us; he said: Sufyan informed us:

“When al-Hajjaj came to ʿAbd al-Malik as part of a delegation, Muʿawiyah ibn Qurrah was with him. ʿAbd al-Malik questioned Muʿawiyah about al-Hajjaj. Muʿawiyah answered, ‘If we tell you the truth, you will kill us; and if we lie, we fear Allah.’ Al-Hajjaj glared at him, whereupon ʿAbd al-Malik said to al-Hajjaj, ‘Leave him alone.’ The Caliph then banished Muʿawiyah to Sind, and Muʿawiyah would thereafter speak of al-Hajjaj’s ruthless power.”
