113 – Dawud ibn ʿAmr al-Dabbi narrated to me; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAwn, from al-Hasan, who said:
“They once brought up a matter in the presence of Muʿawiyah—meaning Muʿawiyah ibn Qurrah—and everyone spoke about it while al-Ahnaf ibn Qays kept silent. So they asked him, ‘Why do you not speak, Abu Bahr?’ He replied, ‘I fear Allah if I lie, and I fear you if I tell the truth.’”
