111 – ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Mawsili, who said:
“Sayyar Abū Turāb once admonished a governor who was stationed in Medina, and the governor had him imprisoned. When the season of Hajj arrived, Sayyar sent word to Khālisa, and she spoke to the governor on his behalf, so he was released.
Both pieces of news—his imprisonment and his release—reached Fudayl ibn ‘Iyād before Sayyar himself arrived. After completing the pilgrimage, Sayyar came to visit Fudayl. The moment Fudayl saw him at close range he exclaimed, ‘Tut! And what harm would it have done you if Hajj had passed you by? Have you not heard what Joseph (peace be upon him) suffered when he sought intercession through someone other than Allah?’
Sayyar cried out and went away. A group of hadith scholars were sitting with Fudayl and began staring at him. Fudayl said, ‘What are you looking at? By Allah, if his very soul had left his body just now, I would not have been surprised.’”
