Al-Amr bi-l-Ma'ruf wa-l-Nahy 'an al-MunkarIbn Abi al-Dunya

109 – ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to me, from al-Fayḍ ibn Isḥāq, who said: “I asked Fudayl ibn ʿIyāḍ about enjoining right and forbidding wrong. He replied, ‘This is not a time for speaking; it is a time for weeping, for earnest entreaty, for humble submission, and for supplicating on behalf of the entire Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ. If they were to shackle your leg here’—and he pointed to a spot just below the knee—‘you would lose heart and be unable to endure; and if you were put to trial you would lapse into disbelief. Some people have indeed been tested, and the severity drove them to renounce the faith.’”
