54 – Abu Bakr Muḥammad said: Al-Faḍl b. Mūsā al-Baṣrī narrated to us; Ibrāhīm b. Bashshār narrated to us; I heard Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah say:
Jesus son of Mary—peace be upon him—met Iblīs. Iblīs said to him, “Is it because of the greatness of your divinity that you spoke in the cradle as an infant—something no one had ever done before you?”
He answered, “No. Divinity and majesty belong to the God who made me speak, then will cause me to die, and then will bring me back to life.”
Iblīs continued, “And is it from the greatness of your divinity that you give life to the dead?”
He replied, “Rather, divinity belongs to Allah alone, the One who will cause me to die and who causes to die those whom I restore to life, then will raise me again.”
Iblīs exclaimed, “By Allah, you are surely a god in the heaven and a god on earth!”
At that, Gabriel—peace be upon him—struck him with his wing a blow that hurled him upward until he nearly reached the rim of the sun; then he struck him a second time, casting him down until he almost reached the boiling spring; then he struck him a third blow, plunging him into the seventh seas, submerging him there until he tasted the foul mud. Iblīs emerged saying, “No one has ever suffered from anyone what I have suffered from you, O son of Mary!”
