45 – Ibn ʿUbayd said: “Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil related to me; Jarir narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Ziyad ibn al-Husayn, from Abu al-ʿAliyah, who said:

When Noah’s Ark finally settled, he suddenly saw Iblis standing on the ship’s bulwark. Noah said to him, ‘Woe to you! All the inhabitants of the earth drowned on your account—you destroyed them!’ Iblis replied, ‘Then what am I to do now?’ Noah told him, ‘Repent.’

Iblis said, ‘So ask your Lord—do I have any chance of repentance?’ Noah called upon his Lord, and Allah revealed to him that Iblis’s repentance would be to prostrate at Adam’s grave.

Noah therefore said to him, ‘A path of repentance has been granted to you.’

Iblis asked, ‘And what is it?’ He answered, ‘That you prostrate at Adam’s grave.’

Iblis exclaimed, ‘I refused to bow to him while he was alive—shall I bow to him now that he is dead?!’”}
